VUB guarantees income of academic and teaching staff

Financial supplement in case of incapacity to work

VUB is one of the first universities in Flanders to provide a guaranteed income for Academic and Teaching Staff (WPP). As a result, these employees lose less income in case of absence due to disability.

Prof. Jan Danckaert, Rector a.i. of the VUB: “The well-being of all employees is of paramount importance to VUB. That’s why the existing insurance plan 'Income Care' from AG Insurance has been extended. The Scientific and Teaching Staff can now count on a guaranteed income in case of occupational disability. "The insurance was already applicable to Administrative and Teaching Staff.

If you are unable to work for a long period of time, the Belgian Social Security system provides a financial safety net via the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance. However, this compensation is limited and restricted, meaning that incapacity to work is often accompanied by a loss of income. The new insurance provides a financial supplement on top of the benefit paid by the health insurance fund. Compensation is paid in case of incapacity for work as a result of sickness, mental illness or a private accident, and during statutory maternity leave.

Majlinda Abduli, deputy director of People&Organisation at VUB: “This means an employee can focus fully on their recovery without financial worries. With this measure, we are therefore adding an extra-legal benefit to our existing range of benefits."

About Press - Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

The World Needs You

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel assumes its scientific and social responsibility with love and decisiveness. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig – The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights... With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. VUB is an ‘urban engaged university’, strongly anchored in Brussels and Europe and working according to the principles of free research.
