Vrije Universiteit Brussel and VUB Palestine Solidarity Network reach agreement on ending occupation
10 July 2024 - The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the VUB Palestine Solidarity Network have reached an agreement to end the occupation of the STOA – named the Jabalia hall by students – that began in May. In a series of meetings between the rectorate, staff and the occupying students, the various demands have been discussed, resulting in an agreement on 9 July.
Rector Jan Danckaert is satisfied with the result and acknowledges the students’ commitment. “For the VUB, commitment to a better and fairer world is crucial. I admire the perseverance of the occupying students. Our university stands for facts and open dialogue, not for rigid dogmas. When there are differences of opinion, it’s essential that we patiently engage with each other and listen carefully. One cannot rigidly insist they are in the right. I am therefore pleased that we have been able to reach an agreement with the students in a constructive manner. This demonstrates that by listening carefully to each other and understanding nuances, we can arrive at solutions for the future.”
A press conference is scheduled on 10 July at 14.00 in the STOA (Jabalia hall)* with the rector, a staff representative and a student from the VUB Palestine Solidarity Network, to give details of the agreement and answer questions from the press.
