Students Discover the Power of Mathematics During VUB Masterclass
Thursday, November 14 – Recent research reveals that as much as 30% of the gross domestic product is linked to mathematical applications. As a result, mathematics graduates find opportunities in virtually every sector of the economy. Yesterday, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) organized a mathematics masterclass for students, where they discovered how mathematics and data science contribute to solving major societal challenges. Participants were also introduced to the updated Mathematics and Data Science program.
This masterclass was specifically designed for students who have mathematics in their curriculum. During the session, they gained a broad perspective on both pure and applied mathematics and learned why the abstract study of patterns and structures is so effective in addressing various challenges. Participants also discovered how mathematics and data science together form a crucial foundation for careers in the digital economy, ranging from cryptography and artificial intelligence to cybersecurity and search engine algorithms.
A Revamped Program
Finally, the students got a sneak peek at the revamped Mathematics and Data Science program at VUB. This unique program – the only one in Flanders to integrate data science at the bachelor’s level – combines pure and applied mathematics with the latest developments in data science.
“The demand for data scientists continues to grow exponentially, and professions requiring insights from mathematics and data science are becoming increasingly vital in sectors such as cybersecurity, architecture, healthcare, and even art. This revamped program addresses that growing demand,” said Professor Jan De Beule, the program’s initiator.
