Press invitation: Launch Brussels School of Governance

With rector Caroline Pauwels and prime minister Alexander De Croo- 9/02/2021 – 18u – Facebook Live

On the initiative of VUB rector Caroline Pauwels, the Institute for European Studies (IES) and Vesalius College are launching an alliance under the name of the Brussels School of Governance (BSoG). This new institution conducts interdisciplinary research, organises fully accredited higher education programmes and provides a wide range of academic services in many policy-related fields, including energy and environment, security and diplomacy, migration and diversity, and digitalisation and democracy. A partnership between the IES (VUB), founded in 2001, and Vesalius College, created in 1986, the BSoG has more than 200 international staff members.

During the launch event, to which you are cordially invited, the concept of the BSoG will be fully explained. Caroline Pauwels, prime minister Alexander De Croo and BSoG president Karel De Gucht, among others, will take the floor. The event will take place digitally on Tuesday, 9 February from 18.00 to 19.00. via a Facebook Live session (in English). Below you can find the programme of the evening. You will find all other information on the event page.

“As two leaders in international education, research and academic services, the Institute for European Studies and Vesalius College have been working together closely for many years. We are therefore pleased that this cooperation is now entering a new phase with a joint realisation as a formal alliance between the two parties,” said Luc Soete, dean of the BSoG.

“Through the location of the BSoG in Brussels, our stakeholders benefit from a unique proximity to various national and international policy communities. We further strengthen our internal expertise through an international network from Washington to Tokyo and Seoul and close cooperation with a wide network of partners, such as UNU-CRIS, the University of Warwick and the European university network EUTOPIA,” said Karel De Gucht, president of the Brussels School of Governance.

About Press - Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

The World Needs You

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel assumes its scientific and social responsibility with love and decisiveness. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig – The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights... With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. VUB is an ‘urban engaged university’, strongly anchored in Brussels and Europe and working according to the principles of free research.
