700 Schoolchildren in Brussels and Flanders Receive VUB-ALEF Certificate for Arabic Language Classes

On Saturday, 350 children in Brussels and 350 children in Flanders received the VUB-ALEF certificate for attending Arabic language classes. A new curriculum with tailored teaching materials, developed by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), supports this initiative. The certificates were ceremoniously handed out during an official event.

Since 2016, the VUB, in collaboration with GO! Scholengroep Brussel, has been organizing Arabic language lessons as an extracurricular activity for children aged six to fifteen through the ALEF program. The program is open to children who are native Arabic speakers and those who wish to learn the language.

This school year, the VUB began a new collaboration with municipal schools in Molenbeek and Anderlecht, as well as Gemeenschapscentrum Ten Noey. Since the start of the school year, children have attended weekly classes on Wednesday afternoons, Saturdays, or Sundays at various locations.

On Saturday, May 4, they gathered at the VUB (Aula Q) to sing songs, showcase what they had learned during the school year, and receive a symbolic certificate. The ceremony was attended by Sven Gatz, Brussels Minister of Finance, Dutch-Language Education, Civil Service, and Multilingualism; VUB Vice-Rector for Internationalization Prof. Dr. Karin Vanderkerken; and Barbara Danis, a representative of GO! Scholengroep.

Later this month, the students will take their final exams to receive a registered certificate.

About Press - Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

The World Needs You

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel assumes its scientific and social responsibility with love and decisiveness. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig – The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights... With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. VUB is an ‘urban engaged university’, strongly anchored in Brussels and Europe and working according to the principles of free research.
