VUB professor of hydrology Marijke Huysmans named among InspiringFifty
Professor selected as Belgian female role model in tech sector
Huysmans carries out research on groundwater, drought and sustainable water management at VUB, and also advises the government. She recently advised the Flemish government in drafting the Blue Deal, which includes structural measures to tackle the growing drought problem in Flanders. She has also taken on the important role of explaining the social importance of groundwater to the general public. She does this through media appearances in which she explains, for example, what drought means and how we can combat it. She also contributed to the children’s science book “Het Grote Waterboek: Van zwetende planten tot verwoestende tsunami’s” (The Wonderful World of Water: From Dams to Deserts).
