VUB invites alumni to Brosella festival of music and solidarity

Friday 7 July 2023 – Brussels music festival Brosella takes place on the weekend of 8 and 9 July. VUB is a supporter of the event and – through a collaboration with the festival – will be there with its own VUB Alumni Tent. The festival is fully aligned with VUB’s values.

Brosella is a multicultural urban and jazz festival, which traditionally takes place at the Groentheater beneath the Atomium. Local artists and established names in various genres are invited to perform on its stages. What’s special about the festival is that it operates on a “pay what you want” basis, with visitors choosing how much to pay for their tickets. This gives people in financial difficulty the chance to enjoy the festival.

VUB Alumni Tent

This year, VUB has its own place at Brosella. Alumni are invited to come and share a drink with friends between 15.00 and 17.00, to connect VUB graduates with one another. VUB rector Jan Danckaert will be there for a chat with alumni.

“There are some values that are very important to us as a university, including urban engagement, connectedness and multiculturalism,” says Danckaert. “You can see all these values reflected at Brosella. Moreover, as a humanist university, we applaud the festival’s solidarity principle. The organisers make the festival accessible to everyone through their ‘pay what you want’ formula. All this makes it an inclusive project that we as a university are happy to support.”

More than 600 alumni, 140 of whom are from outside Belgium, have already registered for the event. VUB sees this as a clear signal that they still believe in the university’s inclusive values.

About Press - Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

The World Needs You

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel assumes its scientific and social responsibility with love and decisiveness. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig – The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights... With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. VUB is an ‘urban engaged university’, strongly anchored in Brussels and Europe and working according to the principles of free research.
