Groundbreaking Research in Molecular Biology by Professor Jan Steyaert

VUB Professor Receives the Prestigious Christian B. Anfinsen Award

Jan Steyaert, professor of structural biology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Scientific Director of the VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology, has made fundamental contributions to structural biology through his research. His innovative applications of nanobodies—small yet powerful antibodies—as molecular tools have enabled researchers worldwide to capture dynamic proteins in specific functional conformations. This has led to a better understanding of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), a crucial class of proteins that play a key role in numerous biological processes and serve as targets for many drugs. Additionally, his research has laid the foundation for multiple spin-offs in Flanders.

For his pioneering work in nanobody technology and the structural analysis of dynamic proteins, Professor Steyaert has been awarded the prestigious Christian B. Anfinsen Award by The Protein Society. This international prize recognizes groundbreaking technological and methodological advancements in protein science.

Professor Steyaert will receive the award at The Protein Society’s 39th Annual Symposium, taking place from June 26 to 29, 2025, in San Francisco, USA. During the symposium, he will present his groundbreaking research findings in a plenary lecture.

“This recognition by The Protein Society is a crowning achievement of years of scientific research,” said Professor Steyaert. “Nanobody technology has revolutionized our understanding of dynamic proteins and opens new doors for innovative therapeutic applications.” He added: “Christian Anfinsen is one of the founding figures of my field, structural biology, and I am truly honored to follow in his footsteps!”

Professor Steyaert also recently inaugurated a new bio-incubator: Read more here.

VUB exclusive academic partner of Horst Festival
Brussels, 12 May 2026 - The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is this year, for the first time, exclusive academic partner of the Horst Arts & Music Festival, which runs from 14 to 16 May at the Asiat site in Vilvoorde. With student projects from the civil engineering-architect programme, the photo exhibition She is Science and an interactive Speakers' Corner, the VUB will bring science, architecture, art and social innovation together on the festival site. The VUB and Horst thus confirm their shared ambition to stimulate new forms of thinking, making and living together. For the VUB, the collaboration represents a unique opportunity to bring academic research and creativity directly into contact with a wide audience.

About Press - Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

The World Needs You

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel assumes its scientific and social responsibility with love and decisiveness. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig – The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights... With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. VUB is an ‘urban engaged university’, strongly anchored in Brussels and Europe and working according to the principles of free research.
