The City of Brussels, with ULB and VUB, is organising a graduation ceremony on the Grote Markt

For the second year in a row, the City of Brussels is organising a graduation ceremony for the students of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Université libre de Bruxelles. The students of graduating year 2021 will experience an unforgettable moment on the Grote Markt and in the City Hall, in the presence of their families and various prominent figures.

From 4 to 10 October, the students of VUB and ULB will be honoured on the most beautiful square in the world. “The graduation ceremony on the Grote Markt is very symbolic, and we in the City of Brussels are delighted to be able to offer ULB and VUB students and their families this experience, especially after the last particularly difficult months in their student careers,” says Philippe Close, mayor of the City of Brussels.

For seven days, this important event will be the focal point for businesses on the Grote Markt and in the city centre. Beforehand, the gowns will be handed out in the magnificent Royal Saint-Hubert galleries.

“It is fantastic to be able to perform the proclamation of our students on Brussels’ magnificent Grote Markt – a strong symbol that magnifies even more than usual the efforts they have made during this difficult period. I warmly congratulate them and thank the City of Brussels for welcoming us back,” says Annemie Schaus, rector of ULB.

“It is wonderful for the students to be able to conclude their studies in style on the Grote Markt , where the city of Brussels welcomes us again this year. It is a crowning achievement of a period of personal growth and intellectual development and an inspiration for their individual future. We give them this beautiful farewell with love,” says Caroline Pauwels, rector of the VUB.

To guarantee everyone’s safety in the stands and in the City Hall, these areas are covered by the Covid Safe Ticket protocol.

Journalists will have free access to the event on the Grote Markt. The QR code of all Covid Safe Tickets will be scanned. Photographers will be able to enter the tribune in front of the balcony of the City Hall (maximum five people at one time).

VUB and La Monnaie/De Munt unveil world-first shoe made entirely from pure mycelium at Milan Design Week
A prototype shoe made entirely from pure mycelium, the root-like network of fungi, will debut at Milan Design Week. The project is a collaboration between researcher and designer Lars Dittrich of Vrije Universiteit Brussel and head shoemaker Marie De Ryck at La Monnaie/De Munt. It reframes how living materials enter application, moving beyond substitution toward a model in which design mediates between advanced biomaterials research and the demands of traditional craft.

From the MAS to the VUB: Martial arts as an engine for social connection
ANTWERPEN/BRUSSELS - The martial arts world is in the spotlight this spring, both in museum galleries and on university campuses. About Press - Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

The World Needs You

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel assumes its scientific and social responsibility with love and decisiveness. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig – The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights... With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. VUB is an ‘urban engaged university’, strongly anchored in Brussels and Europe and working according to the principles of free research.
