Prof. Dr. Luk Van Langenhove appointed as Academic Director of the Institute for European Studies

December 2017 marks the appointment of Prof. Dr. Luk Van Langenhove as new Academic Director of the Institute for European Studies (IES). Prof. Dr. Van Langenhove succeeds Prof. Dr. Christian Kaunert, who recently resigned for personal reasons.

Prof. Dr. Langenhove brings many years of relevant experience, having previously worked at the United Nations University Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS) in Bruges where he held the Director’s position, as well as from UNESCO in Paris where he worked as a Representative of the Rector.

Before he was Deputy Secretary-General of the Belgian Federal Ministry of Science Policy, Deputy Chief of Cabinet of the Belgian Federal Minister of Science Policy and a researcher and lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). From 2006 until 2010 he was Vice-President of the International Social Sciences Council.

Professor Van Langenhove has been affiliated at the VUB and IES for many years.

He is a graduate of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and he received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the same university. He currently also teaches at the VUB. He has published widely on regional integration, social sciences theory, positioning theory and psychology. His recent research at the IES involves science and cultural diplomacy – an area within which he is also heading an H2020 project.

About Press - Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

The World Needs You

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel assumes its scientific and social responsibility with love and decisiveness. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig – The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights... With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. VUB is an ‘urban engaged university’, strongly anchored in Brussels and Europe and working according to the principles of free research.
