Opening academic year 2018-2019 on 25 September in Bozar from 13:30

The beauty of science

Science is wisdom, science is power and science is beauty. That is why we put science in the spotlight of our academic opening ceremony 2018-2019. We kindly invite members of the press to this festive event on Tuesday, September 25th 2018 at 13:30 in BOZAR, Ravensteinstraat 23, 1000 Brussels.

A sustainable policy is one of the central ambitions at VUB. So this year too, academics and students alike will form a bicycle caravan from campus Etterbeek to BOZAR. The cyclist parade, headed by Caroline Pauwels, will leave from the rectorate building on the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus in Etterbeek at 12:00 sharp.

Program

  • Message from the students
  • Multimedial evocation of the wisdom, power and beauty of science, Jean Paul Van Bendegem, Herman Tournaye & Ann Dooms
  • Academic opening speech by Caroline Pauwels, rector VUB
  • Music by Patrick Riguelle & Jan Hautekiet
  • Dance by Michiel Vandevelde

After the academic opening ceremony our traditional drinks reception will be transformed into an open air affair at Warandepark. This time not entirely free. For the occasion, we are collaborating with several Brussels’ social economic partners that will sell drinks and food to benefit various good causes.

Zwangere Guy, Juicy and DC Salas will take care of the musical fireworks. A truly sustainable event in collaboration with KultuurKaffee, VGC, Erasmushogeschool Brussel and deMens.nu. All in light of weKONEKT.brussels, the project that aims to strengthen the ties between VUB and the capital.

Please note: this year’s edition has an earlier start date than usual, at 13:30.

About Press - Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

The World Needs You

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel assumes its scientific and social responsibility with love and decisiveness. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig – The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights... With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. VUB is an ‘urban engaged university’, strongly anchored in Brussels and Europe and working according to the principles of free research.
