Launch of the FULL-MAP Project: Pioneering the Future of Sustainable Battery Technology

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is proud to announce the official launch of the FULL-MAP project, a groundbreaking initiative set to transform battery innovation in Europe. With a substantial budget of €19.95 million and the collaboration of over 30 esteemed partners—including universities, research institutes, and industry leaders in energy storage—FULL-MAP stands as one of Europe's most significant battery projects to date.

The project's primary objective is to develop a fully integrated, autonomous, and chemistry-agnostic Materials Acceleration Platform (MAP) for sustainable batteries. By leveraging advanced automation, artificial intelligence, and high-throughput experimentation, FULL-MAP aims to expedite the discovery and optimization of new battery materials and interfaces, thereby significantly reducing development timelines.

"The kickoff meeting is scheduled for February 3 and 4, 2025, marking the commencement of this four-year endeavor. We are honored to welcome the VUB Vice-Rector, who will deliver the opening speech, underscoring the university's commitment to pioneering research and sustainable innovation. Additionally, we are privileged to host Kristina Edström, Director of the European Battery 2030+ initiative, who will share invaluable insights on Europe's energy transition and the pivotal role of advanced battery technologies." says professor Mesfin Haile Mamme of the surface engineering research group of the VUB.

The consortium's collaborative efforts will focus on automating laboratory operations, integrating AI and machine learning for multi-scale and multi-physics modelling, and implementing high-throughput characterization methods. This comprehensive approach is designed to fast-track the development and deployment of next-generation materials and batteries, propelling Europe to the forefront of sustainable energy solutions.

New lung cancer model reveals how tumor location shapes the immune response
Researchers at VIB and VUB have developed a powerful new way to study how the immune system behaves inside lung tumors. By combining a patient-relevant mouse model with single-cell technologies, the team provides one of the most comprehensive immune maps to date of lung adenocarcinoma, which is the most common subtype of lung cancer. Their work appears in Nature Communications.

About Press - Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

The World Needs You

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel assumes its scientific and social responsibility with love and decisiveness. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig – The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights... With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. VUB is an ‘urban engaged university’, strongly anchored in Brussels and Europe and working according to the principles of free research.
