Announcement of the rector election 2022 results

Who will be the 12th rector of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel?

We would like to cordially invite you, the press, to the announcement of the results of the rector election 2022 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The press conference will take place on Tuesday 21 June at 11.00 in the Braem Building on the Etterbeek campus. The new rector will then address the press.

The battle to succeed Caroline Pauwels is between Jan Danckaert and Dirk Devroey. From Monday 6 June until Monday 20 June, those eligible can vote electronically. As was the case in 2016 and 2020, all staff members of VUB and UZ Brussel, as well as all VUB students, may participate in the election.

The winner will be announced on Tuesday 21 June. He will lead the university for four years. More information can be found on the VUB website, along with the bios of Jan Danckaert and Dirk Devroey, plus their policy plans for VUB.

The new rector will officially take office at the start of the 2022-2023 academic year, for a term of four years.

The rector is the head and general director of the university. They are responsible for preparing and implementing the university’s policies, assisted by the vice-rectors, the general manager, the academic council, the executive committee and others. The rector is accountable to the board of governors.

About Press - Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an internationally oriented university in Brussels, the heart of Europe. By providing excellent research and education on a human scale, VUB wants to make an active and committed contribution to a better society.

The World Needs You

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel assumes its scientific and social responsibility with love and decisiveness. That’s why VUB launched the platform De Wereld Heeft Je Nodig – The World Needs You, which brings together ideas, actions and projects based on six Ps. The first P stands for People, because that’s what it’s all about: giving people equal opportunities, prosperity, welfare, respect. Peace is about fighting injustice, big and small, in the world. Prosperity combats poverty and inequality. Planet stands for actions on biodiversity, climate, air quality, animal rights... With Partnership, VUB is looking for joint actions to make the world a better place. The sixth and last P is for Poincaré, the French philosopher Henri Poincaré, from whom VUB derives its motto that thinking should submit to nothing except the facts themselves. VUB is an ‘urban engaged university’, strongly anchored in Brussels and Europe and working according to the principles of free research.
