On Sunday 22 November, it will be Science Day. To ensure that the annual science festival can take place despite the corona restrictions, the festival is going radically digital: a huge range of science and technology will reach the living room from a digital platform. The Vrije Universiteit Brussel has developed the Brussels Science Box especially for this digital edition, the 10th edition of the festival. Anyone who wants to can use it at home to work with real experiments by scientists.
\nThe Brussels Science Box contains six activities from four VUB research groups: Brussels Photonics, Structural Biology Brussels, Rehabilitation Research Group and the Department of Mathematics and Data Science.
\nThe activities in the box:
\n- VR gaming for faster healing:
\nDesign your own VR glasses and discover how gaming can lead to faster healing.
\n\n- Art with polarisation:
\nCreate a work of art with light that changes colour by turning polarisers. During this workshop you will create your own artwork and learn about polarisation (a property of light).
\n\n- Get DNA from a tomato:
\nDNA is not only in the cells of humans, but also in the cells of animals and plants, even bacteria and viruses. In this experiment, we extract the DNA from a tomato ourselves!
\n\n- Grow your own bacteria:
\nWhen we think of bacteria, we mainly think of germs. But bacteria also help us to digest our food and purify water. Bacteria are everywhere, in your mouth, on your keyboard... \n- Pepper’s ghosts:
\nPepper’s ghost is a transparent inverted pyramid that you place on your smartphone. You then play a special video via YouTube and the images on the video become 3D in the pyramid. Practical: The Brussels Science Box can be picked up free of charge at the Muntpunt collection point from Monday 16 November to Saturday 21 November. One box per family can be collected while stocks last. Muntpunt, Muntplein 6, 1000 Brussels - Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 12.00-18.00; Saturday, 12.00-16.00.
